NEW DELHI -(Dow Jones)- India's telecom tribunal Monday allowed some top mobile-phone companies to continue offering until Jan. 17 third-generation services in areas where they don't own bandwidth.
The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal's ruling offers temporary relief to companies like Bharti Airtel Ltd. (532454.BY), Idea Cellular Ltd. (532822.BY) and the local unit of U.K.'s Vodafone Group PLC (VOD.LN), which aim to boost their revenue by offering such higher-paying services to more customers.
A two-judge bench of the tribunal, chaired by Justice S.B. Sinha, said it will take up the case for hearing again Jan. 17 after telecom companies sought more time to reply to the Department of Telecommunications' view that the tribunal doesn't have jurisdiction on a case that is related to the violation of license rules pertaining to 3G roaming services.
The department says the companies violated rules by signing agreements among themselves to offer 3G services in areas where they don't own bandwidth.
Bharti, Idea, and Vodafone India last month got the tribunal to stay a ban on offering 3G roaming services. That stay order expired Monday.
