It’s almost Halloween! And you know what that means–sitting around on the couch watching creepy movies in five-minute increments, listening for the doorbell. In between the handing out of candy, you can enjoy every item on my list of Best Halloween Movies for Kids and Teens. (Note: these are appropriate movies to watch around Halloween, not necessarily movies about Halloween. Just to clarify).
The Best Halloween Movies for Kids and Teens
The Vampire’s Assistant. It’s a shame this was the only movie made from the Cirque du Freak book series. It really was very clever, with great performances by John C. Reilly and Josh Hutcherson (yes, that Josh Hutcherson). But who knows what the future holds? Maybe some enterprising filmmaker will take another shot at it. After all, vampires have a tendency to rise . . . from the grave.
The Corpse Bride. Only Tim Burton could make decomposing flesh look sexy and sound funny. I don’t know how he does it, but I want him as my embalmer. Oh, and the voices of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Tracey Ullman (among others) certainly don’t hurt the film either.
Monster House. Watching this kid’s movie one Halloween, I (a woman approaching middle-age-ness), was actually scared. That either tells you it’s really good, or I’m really a wimp. Or both. Nothing too gory, just some moments of nervous tension. I can relax now, right? Right? *continues trembling*
The Mummy (I and II). I don’t think III really stands up to scrutiny, but if you want to give it a go, be my guest. I’d skip The Scorpion King spins-off entirely, even though the star of the first one, Dwayne Johnson, is a fairly good actor as well as a studmuffin. Hmmm . . . in that case, maybe you shouldn’t skip it.
Van Helsing: part steampunk, part vampire, and completely awesome, with a steamy cast that includes Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale. If you like your Halloween movies full of the old-fashioned, irredeemable kind of vampires, this one’s for you!
Buffy and Angel. Technically these aren’t movies, but two separate tv series. Just watch them from end to end. Then free up your schedule for the next twenty years so you can do it several thousand more times. Worked for me.
Sleepy Hollow. Creepy. Gothic. Romantic. This one has Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, and Christopher Walken—plus, people getting their heads chopped off. What more could you want from a movie to watch on Halloween?
The Nightmare Before Christmas. Okay, it may be kind of weird and creepy, but I have a crush on Jack Skellington (do NOT judge me!). Singing, dancing, macabre-ing, it’s another bizarre Tim Burton classic that celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
