Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games

BootHammer Video Game Reviews looks at Mario & Sonic?s latest venture at the London 2012 Olympic Games. ?It is the third installment of the Mario & Sonic series. This is a sports game available for the Wii and the Nintendo 3DS. It is an official video game of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and is licensed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through exclusive licensee International Sports Multimedia. For this review, we?ll be looking at the newly released 3DS version. It has over fifty Olympic-based events in single-player and multiplayer including Athletics, Aquatics, Court and Field Games, Contact Sports, Gymnastics, Cycling, Boat Games, Shooting and much more.

Mario & Sonic brings together the two iconic characters and eighteen more from both franchises to participate in environments based on the official venues of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The characters are divided into four categories: all-around, speed, power, and skill. Bowser and Dr. Eggman have been banned from the event. Furious at being rejected, the two villains attempt to stop the London 2012 Olympic Games by using fog machines to cover the whole country in thick fog. Mario, Sonic and all the other heroes attempt to stop the two villains and save the Olympic Games. Various events happen throughout the plot, such as characters being cloned by fog, who challenge the heroes to various events to beat them.

This time around the events have a more mini-game like feel suited more for the mobile on the go gamer. The design behind the games are more simplistic in design and execution. The shooting and BMX based events are addictive. With such a large variety at your disposal everyone will find something they enjoy here. With that said, there are also some games one might be wise to avoid such as sailing or the water bottle based event.

The controls are a mixed bag at times. Some events feature more solid mechanics than others. This is true for nearly all games of this nature though. With such a vast number of events, there are bound to be some that just feel more sound and complete in overall design. While the graphics aren?t pushing the barrier by any means it runs smoothly and the 3D effects look sharp.

The addition of going for medals and top online ranking bragging rights can be quite fun and addictive. While you will have to wade through some hit and miss events, you?ll also find some truly fun games and enjoyable experiences led by two iconic video characters. ?Go for the gold and add this to your 3DS library.

Avid gamer who enjoys the old nostalgic titles as much as the newest releases. Remakes of old classics are my absolute favorite. I also enjoy experiencing new IP's on each console, especially when the creators give the game an artistic edge. I've been lucky enough to start out on the NES and watched as the industry and technology behind it evolve. I"m psyched for the next generation consoles and what is possible.
