India buys Mahatma Gandhi papers for $1.1 million

NEW DELHI: The Indian government has bought t housands o f letters, papers and photographs which shed light on the life of independence hero Mahatma Gandhi, days before they were to be auctioned at Sotheby's in London, a government official said on Monday.

India paid around 60 million rupees or $1.1 million for the papers, which cover Gandhi's t ime i n South Africa, his return to India and his contentious relationship with his family. The auction that was to be held on July 10 has been called off.

"These (papers) are of huge importance to India to carry out research on the Gandhian view on various things, that is why we decided to purchase them," said a senior official at India's ministry of culture in New Delhi, who asked not to be named.

The documents w ill be placed with the National Archives of India in New Delhi.

The documents previously belonged to relatives of Hermann Kallenbach, a German-born Jewish a rchitect w ho m et Gandhi in South Africa in 1904 and was impressed by his ideas.

The Indian leader began his civil rights work and philosophy of non-violent resistance during his 2 0-year so journ in the African country. He remained fr iends w ith Kallenbach after ret urning to India in 1915.

Some reviewers of a Gandhi biography by Pulitzer prize-winning author Joseph Lelyveld published last year, which documented Gandhi's friendship with Kallenbach, said the book cited correspondence between the two men which suggested that they had had a homosexual affair.

Lelyveld has denied that his book "Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India" says Gandhi was bisexual. But the former Indian leader's home state of Gujarat has banned it as an "insult" to the father of the nation.

Among the most illuminating of the documents are dozens of letters written by Gandhi's sons which provide details of his life in India, particularly in the period im mediately af ter his return, when he lived in relative obscurity.

"Father is becoming more and more awful," read one incomplete letter probably written by Harilal, his eldest son.

"It would not be strange if a time may come one of these days when either those who are living with Father might have to go or he might leave us all not being able to stand our life."

Powerful Team USA roster on tap for London

INDIANAPOLIS - Four reigning Olympic Champions and eight current world champions highlight the Team USA roster nominated to the U.S. Olympic Committee by USA Track & Field. A roster of 127 men and women stands ready represent the U.S. in track competition August 3 - 12 in London.

Notable for its depth across a range of events, the roster features 28 athletes - 16 men and 12 women -? who already own individual world or Olympic gold medals. Nineteen are American record holders and one is a world record holder.

2008 Olympic gold medalists set to defend their titles are Lashawn Merritt (400m), Angelo Taylor (400m hurdles), Dawn Harper (100m hurdles) and Stephanie Brown-Trafton (discus).

Fresh off of 2011 world championship titles, eight athletes will look to take their supremacy to the Olympic level: Jason Richardson (110m hurdles), Christian Taylor (triple jump), Jesse Williams (high jump), Trey Hardee (decathlon), Carmelita Jeter (100m), Jenny Simpson (1500m), Lashinda Demus (400m hurdles) and Brittney Reese (long jump).

Amy Acuff is the veteran of the team, as she makes her fifth trip to the Olympics. This will also mark the fourth Olympic Games for Abdi Abdirahman, Bernard Lagat, Aretha Thurmond and Angelo Taylor. Both Acuff and Thurmond have been Olympians since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

No fewer than 19 athletes on the roster currently own an American record indoors or outdoors, including Tyson Gay, Wallace Spearmon, Bernard Lagat, Galen Rupp, Kerron Clement, Brad Walker, Trevor Barron, Ashton Eaton, Allyson Felix, Sanya Richards-Ross, Shalane Flanagan, Lolo Jones, Lashinda Demus, Jenny Simpson, Jenn Suhr, Chaunte Lowe, Jillian Camarena-Williams, Stephanie Brown-Trafton and Kara Patterson.

India skipper joins Sporting Lisbon

India captain Sunil Chhetri has signed for Sporting Lisbon and will play with the B team for two seasons, the Portuguese football club confirmed on Thursday.

The signing is part of an agreement with Indian football authorities to develop the game.

"With our experience in scouting and the development of high level players we are ready through a set of local partnerships to find the best solutions to accelerate the development of football in India," Sporting said in a statement.

The statement described the 27-year-old striker as "an idol in his country", adding: "He will symbolise the dreams of all the young people who have ambition to play in Europe."

"I will have to do a lot of hard work. I will leave no stone unturned, so that I don't regret later in my life. When I am 40, I don't want to feel that I could have done better.

"I am excited. I want to see where do I stand...want to grab it with both hands. I can't let go this opportunity.

"Now, I feel like a 14-year-old.

All India Football Federation president Praful Patel told reporters: "It is truly a very remarkable occasion for Indian football. It's an important milestone. He will be playing shoulder to shoulder with some of the top players of the world. This is a beginning of a new era in Indian football."

The Portuguese sports daily Record said the agreement was part of the club's commercial strategy.

"The B team's matches will be broadcast in India ... and it is possible that the main team's games will also be broadcast, in India and China," the newspaper reported.
