Chinese dethroned as Zanetti, Mustafina pounce

Chinese pair Chen Yibing and He Kexin were deposed as Olympic champions on Monday as Brazilian Arthur Zanetti and Russian Aliya Mustafina accelerated the disintegration of gymnastics' world order.

Chen, a four-time world champion on the still rings, looked destined to retain his title from the 2008 Beijing Games until Zanetti pipped him to glory with the last routine of the men's rings final.

The women's uneven bars champion four years ago, He also made a strong start in her event final, only to see the gold medal adroitly prised from her grasp by a resurgent Mustafina.

Having claimed nine of the 14 golds on offer in Beijing, Chinese gymnasts have won only two to date in London.

Chen was the first gymnast to perform at the North Greenwich Arena on Monday and he finished his assured routine with a broad smile on his face.

His score of 15.800 points was not enough, however, as Zanetti edged him by just 0.100 points thanks to a higher execution mark, earning Brazil their first gymnastics gold in Olympic history.

"I hope this medal will open lots of doors for all the gymnasts in Brazil," said Zanetti, who will bid to defend his title at the Rio Games in 2016.

"I hope that in Rio we'll be able to have a full team, in order to defend this title and fight for others on home soil."

Italy's Matteo Morandi took the bronze medal behind 27-year-old Chen, who revealed his plans to retire after the London Games.

Bulgarian veteran Jordan Jovtchev, 39, also bade farewell to the Olympic arena, finishing in seventh place in the rings final on his record sixth Games appearance.

Mustafina made up for the disappointment of missing out on the individual all-around gold medal by claiming victory on the uneven bars, while Great Britain's Beth Tweddle took home a crowd-pleasing bronze.

Mustafina, 17, had already won individual bronze and team silver in London and she completed her medal collection thanks to a superb 16.133 display that left He with silver.

"I am very, very happy that I've won gold," said Mustafina.

"Every medal represents its own thing. I was hoping very much to win and I was very happy with my routine. I didn't know what to expect of myself today. I did my own thing."

It was Mustafina's first major title since she ruptured knee ligaments at last year's European Championships, and it gave Russia their first gymnastics gold medal of the London Olympics.

Tweddle bows out of the sport after finally adding an Olympic honour to her three world titles, her six European crowns, and her 2002 Commonwealth Games success.

"It was the one that was missing from my collection," said the 27-year-old, who finished fourth in the Olympic uneven bars final in Beijing.

"I wasn't bothered about what colour it was. I saw myself in third and I thought: 'Please don't be fourth again.' I just can't put into words what it means to me."

As China faltered, South Korea were able to celebrate a breakthrough success, after Yang Hak-Seon gave the country their first Olympic gymnastics gold in the men's vault.

The softly spoken 19-year-old averaged 16.533 points with his two vaults, putting him on top of the podium above Russia's Denis Ablyazin and Igor Radivilov of Ukraine.

"We haven't had a gold medal in Olympic gymnastics before and the training didn't go very well, so I was nervous," said Yang.

"But I'm happy that I got over that and won the gold medal."

The artistic gymnastics competition concludes on Tuesday with finals in the men's high bar and parallel bars and the women's floor exercise and balance beam.

Ellen Page Becomes Victim Of Twitter Death Threats

Ellen Page Becomes Victim Of Twitter Death Threats

Twenty-five year old actress Ellen Page has become the victim of a crazed person who has been using Twitter to send her death threats. As a result, we?ve learned that she has turned to the Los Angeles Police Department for assistance with the threats.

The LAPD has already sent Twitter a search warrant demanding information on two accounts on the social networking service which are believed to be from the person making these threats. The crazed fan is said to be bent on murdering Ellen. TMZ reports:

According to the warrant, the two accounts sent Ellen multiple threatening messages back in June ? such as, ?I?m going to murder Ellen Page. She?s dead.?

And, ?Ellen Page if you continue to date Alexander [Skarsgard] I will K-1-L-L you in public in the next year ? Be it in a club, at a game, in a restaurant, or when you?re signing autographs.?

Since the threats have been brought to light, the messages have been removed. The LAPD also revealed that the company that organizes the L.A. Film Festival where Ellen?s latest movie premiered has also received a strange telephone call. Reportedly the caller said that they were going to the festival in order to kill the actress.

The last we?ve heard, Ellen wasn?t actually dating Alexander Skarsgard. They were seen at an L.A. Kings hockey game together in June, but as far as we know, they are only appearing in ?The East? ? in a working capacity.

Still, we hope that Ellen can overcome the craziness and stay safe. We can only hope that the LAPD is successful in locating the person or persons responsible for these needless threats.

Quitting smoking and weight gain link examined | NJ.com

It is no secret that many people use smoking to control their weight, with the main active ingredient nicotine acting as a stimulant and appetite suppressant. Risk of weight gain may even be one of the main reasons why people avoid quitting the habit despite the obvious health benefits. Researchers from a new study published in the British Medical Journal examined the weight changes in quitters from 62 randomized controlled trials for smoking cessation programs.

Researchers included only participants that quit smoking without the aid of nicotine supplementation and prescription drug therapy, and who had succeeded for at least 12 months. They discovered that on average participants gained 10 pounds, with majority of the weight put on within the first 6 months. The results also show that there was great variability. For instance in France 25% of the quitters lost weight or gained less than 2 pounds, while another quarter gained more than 17 lbs. Therefore the study author and professor at H?pital Paul Brousse, Henri-Jean Aubin, feels that it would be inaccurate to produce an average weight gain number for those who wish to quit smoking. He mentioned, "Although our study has confirmed that there is substantial weight gain on average during the first year of continuous abstinence, a prediction of average weight gain will be wrong for most individual smokers.? Nearly 20% of the smokers actually lose weight after one year of continuous abstinence and weight gain seemed to stabilize after three months.

Professors Esteve Fern?ndez and Simon Chapman write in an accompanying editorial to the study that these results may not be typical of quitters who do not use interventions. Approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of smokers do not seek out the assistance of cessation programs, unlike the participants of the study. Therefore they argue that those in the study may be representative of a population lacking self-efficacy, which can significantly affect other lifestyle behaviors such as diet and physical activity. Regardless Aubin emphasizes the importance of quitting smoking, compared to the risk of gaining weight. He said, ?Quitting smoking at age 40 increases life expectancy by nine years, even taking into account the possible post-cessation weight gain. If their smoking patients do not take steps now to quit smoking despite the risk of weight gain, when will they do it?"

Rights group: Ban tear gas sales to Bahrain

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? A U.S.-based rights group urged Wednesday for a worldwide ban on sales of tear gas to Bahrain until the Gulf state conducts a full-scale inquiry into allegations of its excessive use against anti-government protesters.

The appeal was part of a wide-ranging report by Physicians for Human Rights into what it called "unprecedented" levels of tear gas use by Bahraini security forces. The kingdom's majority Shiites began an uprising more than 18 months ago seeking greater rights from the ruling Sunni monarchy, which is backed by fellow Gulf Arab states and the West.

More than 50 people have died in the unrest. The report cites claims that some of the fatalities came from protesters hit by tear gas canisters or suffering respiratory complications.

Bahrain's government said it "denies and condemns the use of lethal force or unlawful means in controlling demonstrations."

"Any means that have been exercised by security forces adhere to international standards of riot control," said a statement in response to the rights group report. "Suggestions that the use of tear gas in Bahrain is severely injurious or even lethal is simply not backed up by any research or proof."

Bahraini officials also have promised investigations into allegations of police abuses in the strategic kingdom, which hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

The report described the intensity and frequency of Bahrain's tear gas use as "unprecedented in the 100-year history" of non-lethal chemical use in crowd control. It specifically cautions Bahrain against using tear gas "in large quantities and in enclosed spaces" because of elevated health risks and potential for fatal breathing complications.

"Equally unprecedented is the government of Bahrain's transformation of toxic chemical agents into weapons used methodically to attack Shiite civilians inside their homes and cars," the report said, noting that such measures "flout international human rights law and constitute torture, cruel, and inhuman treatment."

In addition to the appeal for a global ban on tear gas sales to Bahrain, the group urged the country to suspend use of its tear gas supplies and open investigations into the claims of excessive and improper tear gas use. The group also called on Bahrain to disclose information about the chemical agents used in its tear gas purchases.
