OUYA ships early backer consoles, staggers delivery over the weeks ahead

OUYA console by itself

OUYA is true to its word: the company has confirmed to us that it's shipping the first units of its namesake game console to the many, many people who crowdfunded at a tier high enough to set aside a production system. If you've received a tracking notice, you should expect to have the cuboid at your door in five to ten days, depending on just which corner of the world you live in. Don't be surprised if your inbox remains empty for now, however. OUYA notes that it's spreading delivery over the "coming weeks," which by necessity will leave a few of us twiddling our (currently gamepad-free) thumbs.

Apple, Google eye streaming music services

Apple and Google are looking into the streaming music business, hoping to expand into the hot new market ? or buy their way in. Apple is reportedly in talks with the Beats headphone makers about a new streaming service, while Google may be considering a paid music channel on YouTube.

iTunes and Google Music already give users access to their music while on the go, but not the same way as the likes of Pandora, Spotify and Rdio. The bigger companies offer music "lockers," where users can upload their songs to play on different devices, or music matching, where a scan of your hard drive tells the company what songs you have the right to hear. But these upstart services provide unlimited access to millions of tracks in return for a flat monthly fee, something more desirable to many listeners.

Streaming isn't yet as popular as more traditional listening methods, like plain iTunes or even the radio, but it's gaining popularity, partly because of how easily it works with smartphones and tablets, with their limited storage space and increasingly robust wireless connections. The tech giants can't afford to be left behind in that market, or lose the chance to snap up a promising new company for a bargain price.

To that end, Apple is reported to have had talks with Beats Electronics, maker of the popular Beats line of audio gear, which is working on a new music-streaming service code-named Daisy. Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine in February, Reuters reports, to talk about Daisy and how Apple might get involved.

Google, for its part, is looking to expand the music presence on YouTube, already huge thanks to deals with artists and labels on the Vevo music platform. Vevo and YouTube serve millions of songs per day via music videos, with Google relying on banners and pre-roll ads to generate revenue. It was reported by Fortune, however, that it may be considering a subscription model.

Such a service would likely allow paying users to skip ads and stream music easily to their devices with fewer restrictions (for instance, letting tracks play in the native music player rather than on YouTube itself).

Who's to say when Apple and Google (and others, like Amazon and Samsung) will actually make their moves? The decision often comes down to economics: The music labels want more, the tech companies want to pay less, and the listeners, well, they generally don't want to pay anything at all.

Solving the 'Cocktail Party Problem': How we can focus on one speaker in noisy crowds

Mar. 6, 2013 ? In the din of a crowded room, paying attention to just one speaker's voice can be challenging. Research in the March 6 issue of the Cell Press journal Neuron demonstrates how the brain homes in on one speaker to solve this "Cocktail Party Problem." Researchers discovered that brain waves are shaped so that the brain can selectively track the sound patterns from the speaker of interest and at the same time exclude competing sounds from other speakers. The findings could have important implications for helping individuals with a range of deficits such as those associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, and aging.

"In hearing, there is no way to 'close your ear,' so all the sounds in the environment are represented in the brain, at least at the sensory level," explains senior author Dr. Charles Schroeder, of Columbia University's Department of Psychiatry. "While confirming this, we also provide the first clear evidence that there may be brain locations in which there is exclusive representation of an attended speech segment, with ignored conversations apparently filtered out." In this way, when concentrating hard on such an "attended" speaker, one is barely, if at all, aware of ignored speakers.

Using direct recording of brain activity in surgical epilepsy patients, who were listening to natural spoken sentences, Dr. Schroeder and Dr. Elana Zion Golumbic, also of Columbia University, and their colleagues from New York University, University of Maryland, and Hillside-Long Island Jewish found two types of effects. In and near auditory cortex, brain signals reflect both attended and ignored speech, but attended speech generates higher signal amplitudes. However, in regions of the brain involved in "higher-order processing," such as language and attention control, representation of attended speech was clear, while that of ignored speech was not detectable. Remarkably, the selective, higher-order representation is progressively refined as a sentence unfolds.

"Most studies use very simplified, unnatural stimuli to study the Cocktail Party Problem -- like brief beeps, or even brief phrases -- whereas we were able show that with appropriate techniques, we could study this problem using natural speech," says Dr. Schroeder. "This will stimulate future research to continue the study of this and related issues under rich, natural conditions. Just as importantly, the ability to directly analyze widespread brain activity patterns in surgical epilepsy patients provides an unprecedented opportunity to firmly connect the work on the Brain Activity Map at the model systems level in mice, songbirds, and nonhuman primates to the study of capacities like language and music, that may be uniquely human."

Copyright trolls facing legal sanctions for in-court fraud file ...

Prenda Law is the notorious, scandal-haunted copyright trolling lawfirm that represents various pornography producers, sending extortionate letters to people allegedly detected illegally downloading videos, demanding money to go away ? the alternative being to have your name linked with embarrassing pornography titles in a public record forever.

Prenda made headlines lately for claiming that it was working for a man called Alan Cooper, allegedly the CEO of offshore companies that had hired Prenda to send legal threats on their behalf. Only one problem: Cooper says he has nothing to do with the companies or Prenda. When they were caught in this bit of alleged in-court identity theft, Prenda?s lawyers complained that their judge was being mean to them and tried to get him taken off their case. When this gambit failed, they tried several others ? everything, in fact, except for admitting what seems obvious on its face: they?d misrepresented the facts to the court and stolen Cooper?s identity.

In my opinion, Prenda is a shitshow from stem to stern. From absurd claims like the existence of an adolescent male in a household is proof that illegal porn downloading must be taking place to weird legal theories about BitTorrent users being in conspiracy with one another despite never having met, communicated, and not being aware of one another, every one of Prenda?s actions smacks of utter desperation.

But Prenda?s desperation has reached new depths with its latest gambit: filing three defamation lawsuits each against people who called them out for their bad behavior, including Alan Cooper (the man whose identity was allegedly stolen in Prenda?s court filings) and his lawyer; and, apparently online news sites like Fight Copyright Trolls (who?ve tirelessly chronicled Prenda?s misdeeds), and message-board commenters who expressed shock at the bad behavior on exhibit in Prenda?s deeds.

This desperate move comes mere days before a California hearing on sanctions for Prenda?s counsel. Hilariously, in para 104, the lawyers for Prenda (who have given numerous grandstanding interviews to the national and global press) claim that they are not public figures. They also characterize countless instances of obvious opinion and hyperbole as libelous. And they are clearly fuzzy on the liability for libel on message boards, and the limitations thereof, as set out in the Communications Decency Act.

This feels to me like a last attempt to punish Prenda?s victims for daring to refuse to be victimized, a final shot before the inevitable court sanctions, bankruptcy, and potential jail time. It?s the kind of wickedness that makes it hard to believe in humanity?s essential morality. My goodness, it will be delightful to roast marshmallows over Prenda?s funeral pyre when that glorious day comes.

Copyright trolls Prenda Law, Paul Duffy, and John Steele commence three lawsuits v. Paul Godfread, Alan Cooper and our community

AdvSecret.com Confused About Your Affiliate Marketing Options ...

    By Shani Bergt

What you make when you first get into affiliate marketing is loosely described as a partnership. The companies you?re an affiliate for probably won?t be walking you through every step of the way, but you?ll both reap the benefits of everyone?s hard work. You are going to have to work hard, but you should make sure you are focusing on the right things. Some of these tips can help you fill those missing gaps.

Partner up with affiliates that will provide you with resources to help you sell their products. Generally, affiliate businesses are not stupid. They have done their homework, and researched their customers well. Those affiliate companies that share their selling secrets do better in the marketplace. That means better sales for them and higher commissions for you.

Don?t assume that programs offering 100% commission are a scam. It is easy to reject something after first glance, but read the details and do the proper research. Some companies do this for the reason that they only compensate you on the initial sale, not the subsequent subscription. Although you won?t be earning a commission on recurring subscriptions, getting paid 100% upfront can still be a big moneymaker for you.

If you are working with the most common products, you may have trouble selling. Marketing quality products is important. Keep in mind that when something is extremely popular it doesn?t mean it is automatically considered a quality item. If you choose a very popular product, then you will find yourself in the midst of fierce competition. Profits may be impossible.

In order to be successful with affiliate marketing, you need to know the most efficient marketing methods. Lots of affiliate markets start using the first free choice they run across. Take advantage of free options, but focus your attention primarily on what will get you where you want to be.

A few vendors will do their best at scamming you by convincing you to apply their tracking system to your site. Instead of getting into this mess, find and use a tracking system that is reputable.

When selecting an affiliate company, check the different ways they can pay you, especially if you need a quick payment turnaround. Some companies will pay through PayPal and AlertPay, while others mail checks.

Use affiliate marketing programs to more effectively promote your online business. Affiliate programs have been shown to generate much more site traffic than passive methods such as banner advertisements. Each prospective affiliate program should be carefully assessed based upon its popularity, ease of use, and compensation plan.

A useful affiliate marketing tip is to seek out a company that frequently creates products. You generate more affiliate revenue by working with businesses that have a larger variety of products. Stay away from products that are the current rage, fad, or fashion. These products tend to have a short-lived period of successful profit.

Tell your readers right from the start that you receive a commission from the your affiliate link sales. An affiliate link is usually quite obvious, so attempting to hide that fact will only cause distrust between you and your readers. Through this act of integrity your business is surely to grow.

Affiliate marketing sometimes requires start-up investment. One effective place you can spend is by purchasing ad space on websites that your potential customers frequent. If you will advertise properly with Google, Yahoo and Facebook, you can see the results you?ve been looking for.

Use pop-under ads instead of pop-up ads. With the increasing popularity of pop up blockers chances are they will never been seen. Pop-under ads have been shown to get a more positive response from potential customers than pop-ups.

You should explore alternative applications for the products you advertise in an affiliate marketing program. For example a mat for the backdoor that has a high lip could double as a tray for pet food and water.

You and your affiliates need to avoid taking advantage of your readers? cookies. This can irritate potential customers. However, it also has the potential to interfere with accurate tracking of customer click-throughs, and even transmit malicious viruses.

Many people will eventually ignore or opt out of your emails, so you?ll have to find a new audience. In order to attract new clients, make sure that you send them only the emails that gave you the best results so that you can capture their attention right away.

Don?t start off too big in affiliate marketing. Your chances for success early on will be increased by starting small. You will then have the necessary knowledge to take on more competitive niches.

Affiliate marketing offers many opportunities to make money. The more you know about this business, the more money you will make off of it.

Should You Invest In A Media Server? - Web Hosting Secret Revealed

Most people know about shared hosting, VPS hosting, and dedicated servers, but one type of hosting service that goes overlooked is media servers. These are servers that are built specifically to handle the large amount of resources needed to stream video and audio. A media server allows you to add new elements to your site that you probably never even considered.

    How Media Servers Work

    LiveStream Website

Like I mentioned, a lot of people simply don?t know a lot about media servers because we typically use other services to handle our media for us rather than host it ourselves. This is because videos require large amounts of space to store and a significant amount of resource to stream. But media servers are often installed or added onto your current VPS or dedicated server as separate software.

The media server gives you the ability to stream media (typically video or audio) right on your site rather than rely on a third party service to do it for you. Also, media servers give you the ability to do things that you cannot do with YouTube such as live video streams right from your own website, video chats, and more.

In order to see the capabilities of media servers and how they work, take a look at Livestream.com or Justin.tv. Both of these sites use media servers for the live streaming capabilities.

    Can?t I Just Use YouTube?

One of the first questions I had when I first began learning about media servers is ?why can?t I just use YouTube?? That?s a very valid question and upon doing a little research, I grew to learn the advantages of using a media server rather than YouTube, Vimeo, or other video hosting sites.

    • More control: With sites like YouTube, you don?t have control over your content. The TOS for YouTube is pretty strict and they reserve the right to pull down your videos at any time. With media servers you have complete control over what you can and cannot put on your site without worrying about breaking any rules.
    • Branding: If you want your website to have a completely custom look to it, using a branded video player or media streamer such as YouTube or Vimeo kind of contradicts the goal. Since you?re hosting your own media, the video streamer will actually be a part of your site. It?s similar to having a blog with the domain name, companyname.blogspot.com vs. companyname.com. The former doesn?t have the same professionalism as the latter.
    • Less competition: Look on the right side of YouTube when you?re watching a video. You?ll see a ton of related videos that are from other users. Those other users are your competition. YouTube serves them to your viewers on a silver platter which distracts users from your videos. Using a media server allows you to place the videos on your site without an option to redirect to YouTube where viewers will become distracted by competing sites.
    • Reliability: When you use YouTube to host your videos, you?re relying on their servers to keep your videos up and running. If YouTube has an issue with their servers, then you have a problem as well. There have been plenty of instances where users have run into problems with YouTube videos not loading quick enough. Believe it or not, buffering doesn?t always mean you have a bad internet connection. Sometimes the slow or low quality video playback is a result of the site that is streaming the video. When you use a media server you don?t have to depend on a third party?s server.

Keep in mind that using a media server to host your own videos does not mean that you cannot place your videos on YouTube as well. In fact, I would highly recommend trying to distribute your videos across as many outlets as possible for more exposure and SEO benefits as well.

    Putting Media Servers To Use

I want to go over some cool and creative ways that media servers can come in handy for your site.

    • Live chat: We live in a time where people want a personal level of interaction with businesses, celebrities, and even bloggers. Hosting chat sessions on your website to interact with your customers or website visitors is a great way to get creative with your site. For businesses, you could use it as a customer service tool. For bloggers you could have chat sessions with your readers.
    • Webinars: One of the most obvious benefits you get with streaming video on your own site is the ability to do live webinars. When you use a service like Wowza hosting, you can get time shifted viewing so webinar participants can pause and rewind your webinar as it streams.
    • Exclusive video content: Another way to use your media server is to set up a section with exclusive videos for paying or special visitors. You could use this as a monetization method or just as a way to get more subscribers to your site. You can use the videos to showcase insider tips and tricks related to your business or site too.

So Who Should Invest In A Media Server?

By now, you should have a pretty good idea of the benefits of media servers and how they can be used on your site. If you?re still on the fence about whether or not it?s worth it to invest in a media server, consider a few things. Does your site rely heavily on videos? If the answer is yes, then getting a media server might make sense for you. On the flipside, if you only upload new videos once a year to your site then it probably wouldn?t make much sense for you.

Also, if you read some of the possible use cases I mentioned earlier and you think they?re features you could implement on your site, a media server could definitely benefit you. A media server isn?t a must have for everyone, but when you?re trying to capitalize on video and audio streaming media servers are definitely a great option to explore.

Asia stocks fall amid US budget impasse

BANGKOK (AP) ? Uncertainty about the outcome of a budget battle among political leaders in Washington pushed Asian stock markets lower on Monday.

President Barack Obama and his political opponents have failed so far to agree on a way to roll back automatic spending cuts that took effect Friday. Those cuts slash $85 billion from the nation's budget, which could slow down the economy.

U.S. lawmakers say they want to undo the cuts so that federal programs can be spared but are divided over whether higher taxes should be used to pay for them.

Evan Lucas of IG Markets in Melbourne said he believes the budget fight is just "another political distraction that will cause some investors to cash out and buy back in on the dips."

    Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1 percent to 22,646.46. South Korea's Kospi shed 0.3 percent to 2,019.64. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 1.2 percent to 5,026.80.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index reached its highest intraday level since September 2008 before retreating slightly to 11,674.90, a gain of 0.6 percent.

Investors are seemingly in a buoyant mood ahead of a leadership change at the Bank of Japan. Gov. Masaaki Shirakawa will step down March 19, making way for a new chief who supports Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's call for bolder monetary easing. The central bank meets Wednesday and Thursday for a regular monetary policy review.

A positive manufacturing report pushed Wall Street higher on Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.3 percent to close at 14,089.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.2 percent to 1,518.20. The Nasdaq composite gained 0.3 percent to 3,169.74.

U.S. manufacturing expanded in February at the fastest pace since June 2011. The Institute for Supply Management said that its index of factory activity rose in February to 54.2, up from January's reading of 53.1. A reading above 50 indicates expansion.

Benchmark oil for April delivery was down 7 cents to $90.61 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.37 to close at $90.68 a barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3009 from $1.3017 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 93.32 yen from 93.58 yen.

(AP) ? A pregnant young woman who was feeling ill was headed to the hospital with her husband early Sunday when the car they were riding in was hit, killing them both, but their baby boy was born prematurely and survived, authorities and a relative said.

The driver of a BMW slammed into the car carrying Nachman and Raizy Glauber, both 21, at an intersection in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, said Isaac Abraham, a neighbor of Raizy Glauber's parents who lives two blocks from the scene of the crash.

Raizy Glauber was thrown from the car and her body landed under a parked tractor-trailer, said witnesses who came to the scene after the crash. Nachman Glauber was pinned in the car, and emergency workers had to cut off the roof to get him out, witnesses said.

Both of the Glaubers were pronounced dead at hospitals, police said, and both died of blunt-force trauma, the medical examiner said.

Their infant son was in serious condition, said Abraham. The hospital did not return calls about the child. The Glaubers' driver was in stable condition, police said. Both the driver of the BMW and a passenger fled and were being sought, police said.

On Saturday, Raizy Glauber "was not feeling well, so they decided to go" to the hospital, said Sara Glauber, Nachman Glauber's cousin. Abraham said the Glaubers called a car service because they didn't own a car, which is common for New Yorkers.

The Glaubers were married about a year ago and had begun a life together in Williamsburg, where Raizy Glauber grew up in a prominent Orthodox Jewish rabbinical family, Sara Glauber said.

Raised north of New York City in Monsey, N.Y., and part of a family that founded a line of clothing for Orthodox Jews, Nachman Glauber was studying at a rabbinical college nearby, said his cousin.

Brooklyn is home to the largest community of ultra-orthodox Jews outside Israel, more than 250,000. The community has strict rules governing clothing, social customs and interaction with the outside world. Men wear dark clothing that includes a long coat and a fedora-type hat and often have long beards and ear locks.

Jewish law calls for burial of the dead as soon as possible, and hours after their deaths, the Glaubers were mourned at a funeral Sunday afternoon. Dozens gathered shoulder to shoulder on the street outside, nearly everyone in black. Men in hats stood together just outside the synagogue and women were on the far side of the street, according to tradition. The sound of wailing filled the air as the two black-draped coffins were carried from a vehicle.

After the funeral began, a speaker sobbed uncontrollably, his voice choked with grief and echoing over loudspeakers set up outside.

Afterward, the cars carrying the bodies left and headed to Monsey, where another service was planned in Nachman Glauber's hometown.

"You don't meet anyone better than him," said his cousin. "He was always doing favors for everyone."

She said Nachman's mother herself just delivered a baby two weeks ago.

"I've never seen a mother-son relationship like this," said Sara Glauber. "He called her every day to make sure everything was OK. He was the sweetest, most charming human being, always with a smile on his face."

She added that, of him and his bride, "if one had to go, the other had to go too because they really were one soul."

Highway worker reunited with tot he saved

    By Monica Garske, NBCSanDiego.com

A Caltrans maintenance worker who helped save a toddler?s life along State Route 54 in the San Diego area earlier this week was reunited with the happy, healthy baby boy and his very grateful family on Friday.

On Monday, Caltrans worker Joe Thomas was traveling along SR-54 when he noticed two women in distress on the side of the road, crying and waving for help.

The women, mother Denise Ortiz and grandmother Rebecca Hill, told Thomas their 13-month-old baby, Cesar Ortiz, wasn?t breathing and needed immediate medical attention.

Thomas called 911, grabbed the child from Hill's hands and proceeded to render first aid and CPR on the spot, saving the tot?s life.

Hill says the family was driving on the freeway when baby Cesar suddenly began crying and shaking. After that, the baby?s eyes rolled to the back of his head and he stopped breathing.

By the time Thomas pulled over and got to Cesar, Thomas says the boy was not breathing and had turned blue.

Thomas says he immediately began compressions on the baby?s chest and back and then administered CPR. Eventually, Cesar began gasping for air and was able to breathe on his own again.

Emergency crews arrived shortly thereafter and transported the revived toddler to the hospital. He was released that same day and is now doing well.

Ortiz and Hill say they?re extremely thankful to Thomas for saving Cesar?s life.

Thomas says he just wanted the little boy to be okay and did what he had to do.

?I didn?t think about it, I just did it,? said Thomas.

All three believe Thomas was at the right place at the right time.

Normally, Thomas said he doesn?t travel along SR-54 for work, but that day something just told him to drive that way.

"I just think God led me that way that day. God just used me," he added.

Thomas, who?s worked for Caltrans for the past 15 years and has four children of his own, says he learned his CPR skills from training seminars held by his company.

Thomas says he receives CPR training through Caltrans every three years, but this was the first time he?s ever had to use those skills. He urges everyone to become trained in CPR as a precaution.

After this scary incident, both Ortiz and Hill say they plan to take CPR classes.

?I was scared; I?ve never been through this before,? said Ortiz. ?I have to take a CPR class now, just in case.?

Happy ending and all, the story of Thomas, baby Cesar and family doesn?t end here.

They all say they plan to stay in touch for many years to come.

?We?re in a long term relationship now ? I?m bringing them into my family,? said Thomas.

At Friday?s heartfelt reunion, baby Cesar was full of energy -- walking, laughing, talking and playing like a healthy, bouncy, baby boy. He hugged the man who saved him and giggled when Thomas put a white Caltrans hard-hat on his little head.

As for Caltrans, well, they're pretty proud of Thomas' quick-thinking and compassion on the job.

The company thanked their heroic worker on Twitter earlier this week, posting : ?Great job Joe!?

    Great job, indeed.

Kerry presses Egypt president, military on reform

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was wrapping up a visit to deeply divided Egypt on Sunday with an appeal for unity and reform to the country's president and military chief.

A day after warning the country's bickering politicians that they must overcome differences to get Egypt's faltering economy back on track and maintain its leadership role in the volatile Middle East, Kerry was bringing a similar message to President Mohammed Morsi and his defense minister and intelligence chief. The U.S. is deeply concerned that continued instability in Egypt will have broader consequences in a region already rocked by unrest.

U.S. officials said Kerry will raise Egypt's key regional role with Morsi and his top security aides, stress the importance of upholding its peace agreement with Israel, cracking down on weapons smuggling to extremists in the Gaza Strip and policing the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula while continuing to play a positive role in Syria's civil war. Yet, with parliamentary elections approaching, his call for harmonizing domestic Egyptian politics is just as important, they said.

Liberal and secular opponents of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood say they will boycott upcoming elections, and violent clashes between protesters and security forces have created an environment of insecurity, complicating Egyptian efforts to secure vital international aid.

In meetings with Egypt's foreign minister and opposition politicians on Saturday, Kerry said reaching agreement on economic reforms to seal $4.8 billion in International Monetary Fund loans was particularly critical. Closing the IMF deal also will unlock significant U.S. assistance promised by President Barack Obama last year.

But the impact of his message of unity to the opposition was likely blunted as only six of the 11 guests invited by the U.S. Embassy turned up and three of those six said they still intended to boycott the April parliamentary election, according to participants.

Kerry said that the U.S. would not pick sides in Egypt, and he appealed to all sides to come together around human rights, freedom and speech and religious tolerance. Equally essential, he said, is uniting to undertake the reforms necessary to qualify for the IMF package. Those include increasing tax collections and curbing energy subsidies.

However, while expressing sympathy with the passion he heard from the opposition, Kerry suggested U.S. frustration with their tactics even as he maintained that "we're not here to interfere, but to listen."

"The best way to ensure human rights and strong political checks and balances ... is through the broadest possible political and economic participation," Kerry said after meeting Egyptian Foreign Minister Kamel Amr. "We believe that being active, engaging in peaceful participation is essential to building strong communities and healthy democracies."

In an apparent nod to the current stalemate in Washington over the U.S. federal budget, Kerry acknowledged that compromise is difficult yet imperative.

"I say with both humility and with a great deal of respect that getting there requires a genuine give-and-take among Egypt's political leaders and civil society groups just as we are continuing to struggle with that in our own country," he said. 'There must be a willingness on all sides to make meaningful compromises on the issues that matter most to all of the Egyptian people."

The opposition accuses Morsi and the Brotherhood of following in the footsteps of toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, failing to carry out reforms and trying to install a more religiously conservative system.

Morsi's administration and the Brotherhood say their foes, who have trailed significantly behind Islamists in all elections since the uprising against Mubarak, are running away from the challenge of the ballot box and are trying to overturn democratic gains.

Egypt's polarization was underscored as Kerry arrived from Turkey on Saturday on the sixth of nine stops in his first official overseas visit as secretary of state. Activists in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura said a 35-year-old protester was killed when an armored police vehicle crushed him to death during anti-Morsi protests Saturday. And, in the restive Suez Canal city of Port Said, a police vehicle ran over five people after marching protesters refused to allow the car through.

Months of such turmoil have scared away tourists and foreign investors, eroding Egypt's foreign reserves by nearly two-thirds of what it was before the uprising. Those reserves, which stand at less than $14 billion, are needed to pay for subsidies that millions of poor Egyptians rely on for survival.

"It is paramount, essential, urgent that the Egyptian economy gets stronger, gets back on its feet and it's very clear that there is a circle of connections in how that can happen," Kerry told business leaders shortly after his arrival. "To attract capital, to bring money back here, to give business the confidence to move forward, there has to be sense of security, there has to be a sense of political and economic viability."

After concluding his meetings in Egypt on Sunday, Kerry will head to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, where his focus is expected to be the crisis in Syria that dominated his earlier stops in Britain, Germany, France and Turkey, along with concerns about Iran's nuclear program and growing Iranian assertiveness in the Persian Gulf. Kerry is set to return to Washington on Wednesday.
