Ravens poised to take next step in crowded AFC

Two years, two close calls, and two long offseasons pondering "what if" for the Baltimore Ravens.

What if Billy Cundiff hadn't missed that chip-shot field goal against the Patriots in the AFC championship game eight months ago, the one that would have sent it to overtime? What if Baltimore's usually reliable defense held onto that seemingly comfortable 14-point halftime lead over the hated Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional round the year before that?

In a league that rarely offers second chances ? let alone third ones ? the Ravens find themselves still searching for that Lombardi Trophy to bookend the one linebacker Ray Lewis led them to a dozen seasons ago.

Time is running out.

Lewis is 37 and noticeably slimmer but he's already logged 222 games at one of football's most demanding positions. Safety Ed Reed turns 34 next month and skipped minicamp while hinting at retirement. Quarterback Joe Flacco is entering his fifth year as a starter and running back Ray Rice is signed to a long-term deal and in his prime.

Anything less than ending the season in New Orleans will be a disappointment.

Coach John Harbaugh has preached "finish" during training camp, the one thing the Ravens haven't done on the cusp of the game's biggest stage. This may be their best ? and perhaps last ? shot at breaking through in a competitive conference in the midst of a transition.

The Steelers begin the season with eyes on a seventh championship, but are also dealing with the kind of roster turnover they've largely avoided during their latest revival.

The Patriots might be the only team in the league nursing a bigger postseason hangover than the Ravens after the New York Giants stunned them ? again ? in the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady's longtime rival Peyton Manning left Indianapolis for Denver, where the Broncos believe the four-time MVP's surgically repaired neck is strong enough to get them back to the Super Bowl for the first time since John Elway was doing his thing.

Houston finally broke the Colts' stranglehold on the AFC South when Manning sat out last season, and the Texans appear to easily be the class of that division as long as quarterback Matt Schaub, running back Arian Foster and wide receiver Andre Johnson stay healthy. The Texans won their first playoff game behind rookie T.J. Yates before falling to Baltimore in the divisional round.

"The key is that you stay focused on your goals and you stay focused on the work," coach Gary Kubiak said, "because you never know how something is going to happen."

___

AFC EAST

Perhaps no player took New England's late collapse against the Giants harder than Brady. Coming off another typically brilliant regular season, Brady was the last Patriots player in uniform in a dejected locker room after a fourth Super Bowl ring vanished. At 35, the window is starting to close on his Hall of Fame career. The offense remains dangerous as long as he's around, though the real issue will be if New England's defense can improve after finishing 31st in yards allowed and crumbling in the final moments against Eli Manning.

The New York Jets were among the NFL's most disappointing teams last fall, sliding to 8-8 as quarterback Mark Sanchez threw a season-killing 18 interceptions and opponents stopped fearing "Revis Island." New York traded for Tim Tebow in the offseason hoping the charismatic if erratic quarterback can make an impact both on the field and in the locker room. Sanchez remains the starter and appears to have kept his sense of humor. He joked the team was saving all its touchdowns for the regular season after the Jets went three straight exhibition games without reaching the end zone. The joke will be on Sanchez and coach Rex Ryan if New York takes another step back.

The Buffalo Bills got off to a hot start a year ago behind quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Then the team signed the QB to a contract extension and immediately started to get buyer's remorse. Buffalo went 2-8 after Fitzpatrick signed the six-year, $59 million deal. He'll need to start earning that paycheck this season, and the Bills have opened their wallets for their defense, signing end Mario Williams to give a toothless defense some bite.

The Miami Dolphins blew things up for the second time in five years, bringing in Joe Philbin as coach and giving the starting quarterback job to rookie Ryan Tannehill. To add a little appeal to a franchise that has ceded the local spotlight to LeBron James and the Miami Heat, the Dolphins signed wide receiver Chad Johnson and let HBO film its popular "Hard Knocks" training camp series with the team. The camera crew lasted longer than Johnson, perhaps a sign the Dolphins realize their problems are not a quick fix.

___

AFC NORTH

Lewis slimmed down during the spring hoping to keep his body fresh. Consider the weight Lewis shed now firmly on Flacco's shoulders. The 27-year-old who once proclaimed himself the best quarterback in football will need to play like it at times for Baltimore to excel. The aging defense will miss the presence of linebacker Terrell Suggs, out indefinitely after tearing his right Achilles tendon while playing pickup basketball.

Pittsburgh remains among the most stable franchises in the NFL, but even they aren't immune to change. In addition to the retirement of wide receiver Hines Ward and the release of linebacker James Farrior ? who have a combined four Super Bowl rings ? Pittsburgh let go offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and brought in former Kansas City coach Todd Haley. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger likened the transition to Haley's offense to learning a new language. He'll need to get fluent in a hurry behind an injury marred offensive line.

Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis has made a habit out of turning seemingly untenable situations into playoff berths, doing it a year ago with rookie quarterback Andy Dalton and receiver A.J. Green. Yet consistency has never been the team's trademark. The Bengals have made the postseason in consecutive years only once in franchise history.

The Browns borrowed a page from rival Cincinnati's book by going with 28-year-old rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden and third overall pick Trent Richardson at running back. The Bengals rode that kind of combination to the playoffs. The Browns would love to ride it to somewhere in the vicinity of .500. Yet Richardson spent part of the preseason dealing with a knee issue that could linger into September, and there are plenty of questions about who Weeden will throw to.

___

AFC SOUTH

The Texans could finally exhale after more than a decade of building ? and rebuilding ? landed them in the playoffs. They've got so much depth atop such a lackluster division they could stay there a while. Foster is among the league's best running backs and Schaub was in the midst of a career year before being brought down by injury.

Tennessee nearly tracked down the Texans in the final month of the season despite a lackluster performance from running back Chris Johnson as "CJ2K" became "CJBarely1K." The Titans hope to remain tight on Houston's heels behind second-year quarterback Jake Locker, whose mobility gives Tennessee's offense an added dynamic that could take pressure off Johnson.

The Indianapolis Colts felt so certain about Andrew Luck they hit the reset button on the entire franchise. Manning is gone. So is the coaching staff that took the team to the Super Bowl in 2010. The precocious Luck has looked like a wise investment during the preseason, showing the poise of a player far beyond his 22 years. Having the likes of Reggie Wayne around helps.

Jacksonville owner Shahid Khan is a master marketer who wants to pump some life into the beleaguered Jaguars and is so eager to do it he committed to playing four "home" games in London, one a year starting in 2013. At some point he hopes his team's play on the field ? and not it's travel schedule ? is headline worthy. It just won't be this season.

__

AFC WEST

Norv Turner continues to survive in San Diego despite seemingly diminishing returns. The Chargers woefully underachieved a year ago, as a series of injuries and a midseason slump allowed them to get Tebowed out of the postseason. Philip Rivers tried to largely do it himself, with woeful results. He tossed a career-high 20 interceptions; a healthy TE Antonio Gates should provide a return to normalcy. San Diego addressed its needs on defense by signing linebacker Jarret Johnson and using its first three draft picks on defensive players.

Kansas City made a stunning fall from a 2010 playoff run due to a series of injuries that gutted the roster. Running back Jamaal Charles, quarterback Matt Cassel, safety Eric Berry and tight end Tony Moeaki are all healthy. Having Romeo Crennel ? as placid as former coach Haley was fiery ? should keep the Chiefs on an even keel; so should a user-friendly schedule in the second half of the season.

The sight of Manning wearing orange and blue is going to take some getting used to. Manning felt confident enough in Denver's ability to compete for a title he spurned offers from other teams ? Arizona most notably. Going from Tebow to Manning is one of the most dramatic QB changes in recent memory. The Broncos will need to adapt quickly to be a threat in a tightly packed division.

The Oakland Raiders are so confident in Darren McFadden's health they didn't stop reliable backup Michael Bush from fleeing to Chicago. New coach Dennis Allen is trying to restore a sense of discipline to a franchise that largely ignores the trait. Quarterback Carson Palmer went 4-5 as the starter, but didn't have McFadden in his backfield. Allen's defense could help a defense that struggled in 2011. Still, Palmer will have to throw the ball eventually, and the Raiders haven't had a true No. 1 receiver since Randy Moss.

Phillip Morris - A Value Investing Classic - Stocks - eWallstreeter

From: Long Investing Ideas from Seeking Alpha - 12:57pm - August 29, 2012

By David Trainer:My previous recommendation was new to the value investing club (see "Buy CSCO: A Treat For Value Investors"). This week, I bring back a classic value stock -- Phillip Morris (PM). Focusing on the reported GAAP earnings of PM leads investors down the wrong path. Too many of my peers get lost in debt ratios, quick ratios, and price-to-earnings ratios. These analyses miss the mark and do not capture the strength of PM's underlying cash flows. I recommend investors arbitrage the market's disconnect in valuing PM based on GAAP earnings instead of its true economic earnings. My model shows that the market's expectations for PM's future cash flows are lower than the consensus estimates for GAAP earnings. I believe this disconnect arises from the difference between PM's GAAP earnings and economic earnings. Figure 1 below shows how PM's economic earnings over the past tw...

Iran might let diplomats visit suspected nuclear site

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran indicated on Monday it might allow diplomats visiting Tehran for this week's Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit to inspect the Parchin military base, which U.N. nuclear experts say may have been used for nuclear-related explosives tests.

When asked about the possibility, Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh said: "Such a visit is not customary in such meetings ... However at the discretion of authorities, Iran would be ready for such a visit," the Iranian government-linked news agency Young Journalists Club reported.

The tentative offer was made just three days after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) again requested access to Parchin for its inspectors at a meeting in Vienna.

Iran is hosting the NAM summit, which ends on Friday, at a time when the West is trying to isolate the Islamic Republic over suspicions it is seeking a nuclear weapons capability. Tehran says its atomic program has only peaceful aims.

Any visit to Parchin by NAM representatives would do little to calm Western concerns or those of the IAEA whose talks with the Iranians ended on Friday without agreement.

The U.N. body suspects that Iran has conducted explosives tests in a steel chamber at Parchin relevant for the development of nuclear weapons, possibly a decade ago.

Citing satellite pictures, Western diplomats say they believe Iran in recent months has been cleansing the site where the experiments are believed to have taken place of any evidence of illicit nuclear activity.

The IAEA is voicing growing concern that this would hamper its investigation if it ever gained access to Parchin.

Last week diplomatic sources said Iran had covered the building believed to house the explosives chamber with a tent-like structure, fuelling suspicions about a clean-up there.

Iran says Parchin, a vast, sprawling complex southeast of Tehran, is a conventional military facility and has dismissed allegations about it as "ridiculous".

Monday's Iranian media report did not make clear whether the NAM diplomats would be able to visit the location in Parchin which the IAEA wants to see or only other areas of the complex.

Akhoundzadeh said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is due to attend the NAM summit later in the week, might be able to visit Iran's nuclear sites.

"At the discretion of officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, there is also the possibility of a visit by the U.N. Secretary General to our country's nuclear centers," YJC quoted Akhoundzadeh as saying.

He said Ban would visit Isfahan, but did not say whether he would go to a uranium processing site near the Iranian city.

U.N. officials were not immediately available for comment.

In early 2011, Iran invited Vienna-based diplomats to tour its nuclear facilities, an offer dismissed by Western states as a ploy by Tehran to appear to show openness while still refusing to give IAEA experts the kind of access they need.

Apple lists 8 Samsung products it wants banned

9 hrs.

Apple Inc. on Monday submitted a list of eight Samsung Electronics Co. products it wants pulled from shelves and banned from the U.S. market.

Apple submitted the list after a jury found Samsung copied the iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing the products.

The products are: Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.

A judge will decide the issue later.

Apple claimed in a sweeping lawsuit that Samsung's smartphones and computer tablets "slavishly copied" the iPhones and iPads. Samsung countered with its own claims that Apple used its wireless technology without proper compensation.

A nine-person jury in its verdict last week unanimously agreed with Apple and ordered Samsung to pay $1 billion. Most of the damages were tied to Samsung's smartphones. It rejected Samsung's counterclaims.

The award represents about 1.5 percent of Samsung's annual revenue. Analysts said the embarrassment of the verdict is a bigger blow for Samsung than the financial setback.

Still, the question remains whether Samsung and other Apple competitors will have to redesign their smartphones to avoid infringing Apple's patents. Most analysts agree the verdict sends a threatening message to device makers like Samsung who use Google's Android operating system.

Special schools' closure plan angers teachers | Stuff.co.nz

Primary school teachers say the Government's plan to close two of New Zealand's four residential special schools will force children with severe intellectual disabilities and behavioural issues back into mainstream education and put pressure on schools, families and communities.

Education Minister Hekia Parata yesterday announced Halswell Residential College in Christchurch and Auckland's Westbridge Residential School would remain open, but it is proposing to close Salisbury Residential School in Nelson and McKenzie Residential School in Christchurch.

It is part of a new mixed model for special education which will expand tailored individual services for students with complex needs within their own communities.

The schools have 28 days to respond to the plan.

The primary teachers' union, the Educational Institute, says there is inadequate long-term funding to push high-needs students back into mainstream schools because additional funding would only be available to schools for up to two years.

National president Ian Leckie said after that, schools would be expected to fund specialised support from their own budgets.

However Parata told reporters the Educational Institute was wrong as extra money to support mainstream schools who took on high-needs students would be provided indefinitely.

The four residential special schools were staffed with highly trained and qualified special education teachers.

"Schools will struggle to provide that level of care, especially once targeting funding is removed. This will inevitably place further pressure on teachers and families of these children," Leckie said.

Labour's special education spokesperson, Chris Hipkins, said the plan was another "class sizes-style decision" based on costs, not children.

In June Parata was forced into an embarrassing backdown over plans to increase class sizes after outrage from teachers and parents.

Hipkins said the Education Ministry's discussion document made it very clear the changes were about saving money.

"It costs about $84,200 per year to educate a student at a residential school, whereas the new 'wrap-around' model the minister speaks of costs $29,000 a year. These kids are getting short-changed."

Parata had made decision about the schools without visiting them, he said.

"I have visited all four schools and I'm very open about the fact that my perspective has changed completely as a result."

The schools provided desperately-needed respite for the childrens' families, Hipkins said.

Parata today said the two schools remaining open would be able to cater for the same amount of students the four schools did now. Most students who needed such services were in the North Island.

Any money saved would go back into the coffers for additional services.

"We have also found that the evidence supports the fact that there are better, more sustainable outcomes for students where that service can be provided to them in their home community," she told Radio New Zealand.

"Residential schools provide part of that service but inevitably, our students need to go and be re-integrated back into their home communities and what this proposal does is provide an 'and and' solution, not an 'either, or'."

Now Legal Speech in Michigan: ?Cold and Hungry, God Bless ...

On July 4 of last year, Grand Rapids cops arrested Air Force veteran Ernest Sims for asking a passerby ?Can you spare a little change?? Two days earlier, James Speet was also arrested, for holding a sign that read, ?Need Job, God Bless.? Seven months earlier, Speet was arrested and jailed for holding a sign that read, ?Cold and Hungry, God Bless.?

On Friday, a Grand Rapids judge, Robert Jonker, ruled those arrests?and the MI law on which they were based?unconstitutional.

While I?m grateful that it is now legal to hold a sign in MI asking for work, I?m still appalled that a judge had to point out the problem with this logic to MI?s Attorney General, Bill Schuette.

The State of Michigan and the City of Grand Rapids (collectively, the ?government?) assert that Michigan?s statutory ban on public begging is constitutional on its face, and they emphasize that the statute serves several desirable purposes. According to the government, the ban helps businesses, because the presence of people begging in or near business establishments may deter others from patronizing those businesses. The government also emphasizes that the ban on begging helps prevent fraud, because beggars may not use the contributions for the purposes donors intend. Indeed, the government observes, some beggars may use such contributions for alcohol and illegal drugs. The government also points out that begging can be intimidating or annoying to others and that the ban helps protect the public from harassment.

Because God forbid a man hurt someone?s business by holding a sign asking for work.

Germany says 'time is money,' and additonal funds for Greece aren't an option

Germany's economic minister said Greece needed to stick to their time table for bailout reforms. Greece has asked for 'time to breathe' before making budget cuts and economic reforms.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, (l.) welcomes the Prime Minister of Greece Antonis Samaras, for a meeting at the chancellery in Berlin, Germany Friday.

Germany's economy minister has rejected calls for Greece to get more time to implement economic reforms, saying in an interview Sunday that Athens needs to respect the bailout deal reached with its international creditors.

Philipp Roesler's comments to ZDF public television come after a visit by Greece's prime minister to Berlin on Friday, during which Antonis Samaras told German Chancellor Angela Merkel that his country needs "time to breathe" before it can make all the budget cuts and reforms demanded as part of its ?240 billion ($300 billion) bailout packages.

"What the Greeks have asked for, half a year or two years, that's not doable," said Roesler, who is also the vice chancellor in Angela Merkel's coalition government.

He added that "time is always money" and all parties had agreed that additional funds for Greece weren't up for debate.

Roesler, the leader of Germany's pro-business Free Democratic Party, has long taken a hard line on Greece. Last month, he caused an outcry in Greece by suggesting the idea of the country leaving the 17-nation eurozone had "lost its horror."

Those comments appeared to put him at odds with Merkel, who has always insisted that Greece should remain in the euro.

But his latest views on the need for Greece to stick to the agreed time plan for reforms were echoed by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, who told a newspaper in comments published Sunday that "more time generally means more money and that quickly means a new (bailout) program."

The question of how to avert a Greek debt default, which could spark a chain reaction among other ailing European economies, has preoccupied EU leaders as they return from their traditional summer break.

French President Francois Hollande urged Greece on Saturday to do more to show its commitment to reforms, and offered the country no immediate hope for relief from its current regime of painful austerity measures. Like Merkel, Hollande said further decisions on Greece need to wait for a report next month by the country's debt inspectors.

Meanwhile, the German chancellor is reported to be pushing for EU leaders to begin work on a treaty that would see deeper political integration at a time when the eurozone crisis is pushing member states toward greater economic inter-dependence.

Merkel has long said closer political integration is needed at a time when the European project threatens to unravel because of the strain caused by government debt crises in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece.

Merkel's office didn't immediately respond to requests for comment Sunday on the report by respected German weekly Der Spiegel, which claimed that German diplomats have indicated she wants European leaders to start working on a new legal framework for the EU at a summit in December.

Der Spiegel said the new treaty could include provisions such as giving the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg power to monitor the budgets of member states and punish those who exceed deficit limits.

Girls and Friends: Pop Culture Unicorns ? this ain't livin'

Genuine friendships between girls are radically underrepresented in pop culture. Only a handful of such relationships are depicted, which means that when they are, they really tend to stand out, and they seem almost freakish at times, because they defy everything people think they know about women and girls and how they relate to each other. It?s one reason to get excited about pop culture that is exploring the complex relationships women can build in an environment where those relationships are real, and not founded on ulterior motives.

All too often in pop culture, women aren?t really friends. Their relationships with each other are nasty and savage, filled with jealousy and machinations as each woman tries to get ahead. It depicts a girl-eat-girl world, one where being a woman means you can?t trust other women, because they will try to take things away from you, and they will stop at nothing to do it. Consumers of pop culture start internalising these messages; that other girls will steal your boyfriends, or sabotage you when you?re trying to do something, or will tattle on you if you come to them for help and disclose confidential information. The takeaway is that girls can?t be friends, because they will inevitably destroy each other.

There are a lot of assumptions embedded in this depiction of women?s relationships in pop culture. One, of course, is that friendships are inherently less valuable than romantic relationships, and thus will always take a backseat to them. In this setting, of course friends would ride over each other to get what they want, because they have their eyes on the prize. That prize is a boyfriend (we live in heteroland, remember?), not a friend, and that boyfriend will always trump anything a friend could bring to the table.

Friends are the training wheels, there to be used when convenient and thrown away when you?re done and can ride on your own. Sure, you can lean on a friend when you?re in need, but don?t lean too hard, and don?t read too much into it, because you?ll both eventually build your own relationships and you will forget about the friendship and what it may have meant to you. And never, ever forget that your ?friend? could turn on you at any moment, because that?s what girls do. Since they?re all backstabbing, cheating liars with no compassion.

There?s also, of course, the belief that women are inherently untrustworthy. Depictions of female friendships in pop culture rely on this as a form of cultural shorthand; they don?t need to spell out the fact that ladies can?t be trusted to have each other?s backs, because everyone knows this is the case. They don?t need to explain why a girl might steal another girl?s boyfriend or cheat on a test or sabotage a project, because that, again, is what girls do. Don?t trust them any further than you can throw them, because putting faith in women will set you up for eventual failure.

Rich relationships between women and girls who actually enjoy a genuine emotional connection are extremely rare in pop culture. Such relationships don?t have to be all sunshine and rainbows; a good friendship is often tested by hardships which can include interpersonal problems as well as outside pressures. That?s how you tell if a friend is for real, or is a shadow, something else entirely. All too often in pop culture, such tests are used to reiterate the idea that women can?t be friends with each other because they?re too catty and self-centred to invest any time or energy in other people, rather than to demonstrate that, yes, women can be friends.

And those friendships can be about something other than waiting for a romantic relationship. They can involve a tight connection based on mutual love and affection, one where both parties are getting something out of the relationship, but that?s not what they are in it for. These are friendships where people discuss something other than their longing for romantic partners, where they do things together as a pair that aren?t about going out and trolling for guys. They are friendships where people are focused on each other, not the next best thing outside the relationship.

There seems to be a deep fear of depicting honest relationships between women in pop culture, and one of the few places you?ll find them is in women-helmed projects, where people have an opportunity to depict their own experiences and create characters who represent them and their own lives. Such projects are often written off as ?for women? and thus not of general interest, or importance. In a world where women are devalued and considered less interesting than men, any sort of attempt to explore the complexity of female friendships is almost doomed from the start, especially when such projects don?t involve women attacking each other to get ahead in the world.

It?s a bitter message to be sending to young women and girls, who rarely get to see healthy relationships between women modeled in pop culture, and take away some very sad ideas about how women relate to each other. When your understanding of such friendships comes from media that constantly warns you about the perils of women friends, you enter such relationships with extreme distrust, and have trouble believing that anyone could really be your friend; she must have an agenda, she must be planning to use you, she will turn on you eventually, because that is what girls do.

So maybe it would be better for you to take the offensive, rather than being the one who will be the inevitable victim. And thus, the cycle is perpetuated, as girls are told they can?t be friends with girls, and enter precisely the exploitative and sometimes abusive ?friendships? they believe are inevitable.

Indo-European languages originated in Anatolia, research suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? The Indo-European languages belong to one of the widest spread language families of the world. For the last two millenia, many of these languages have been written, and their history is relatively clear. But controversy remains about the time and place of the origins of the family. A large international team, including MPI researcher Michael Dunn, reports the results of an innovative Bayesian phylogeographic analysis of Indo-European linguistic and spatial data.

Their paper appears this week in Science.

The majority view in historical linguistics is that the homeland of Indo-European is located in the Pontic steppes (present day Ukraine) around 6,000 years ago. The evidence for this comes from linguistic paleontology: in particular, certain words to do with the technology of wheeled vehicles are arguably present across all the branches of the Indo-European family; and archaeology tells us that wheeled vehicles arose no earlier than this date. The minority view links the origins of Indo-European with the spread of farming from Anatolia 8,000 to 9,500 years ago.

Lexicons combined with dispersal of speakers

The minority view is decisively supported by the present analysis in this week's Science. This analysis combines a model of the evolution of the lexicons of individual languages with an explicit spatial model of the dispersal of the speakers of those languages. Known events in the past (the date of attestation dead languages, as well as events which can be fixed from archaeology or the historical record) are used to calibrate the inferred family tree against time.

Importance of phylogenetic trees

The lexical data used in this analysis come from the Indo-European Lexical Cognacy Database (IELex). This database has been developed in MPI's Evolutionary Processes in Language and Culture group, and provides a large, high-quality collection of language data suitable for phylogenetic analysis. Beyond the intrinsic interest of uncovering the history of language families and their speakers, phylogenetic trees are crucially important for understanding evolution and diversity in many human sciences, from syntax and semantics to social structure.

Live2D drawing technology adds a little 3D spice to your hand drawn images

While 3D graphics have been filling our eyes in cinemas and video games way before Nemo ever got lost, we've typically had to settle for computer generated artwork. Live2D from Cybernoids is a drawing technology that hopes to change that. The software lets animators and game creators give hand drawn 2D images rudimentary 3D qualities. In the video above you can see the character turn her head, and the image -- based solely on the 2D version -- twists and adapts in real-time. There are two versions of the software, one based on polygons, and the other vectors, and there is support for consoles and smartphones -- but no details on specifics at this time. The developers admit it's only suitable for limited movement, such as in dialog-based games, for now, but hope to have the tools to handle full 360 degree motions over the next two years. At least, for now, its way way further down on the creep-o-meter scale.

40 indicted in drug ring run from Indiana prisons

(AP) ? Two inmates housed at different Indiana prisons ran a drug ring that distributed methamphetamine and heroin thanks to cellphones smuggled in by guards, according to a federal indictment that charges 40 people in connection with the scheme.

An indictment unsealed Wednesday alleges that the purported ringleader, Oscar Perez, and an inmate at another prison, Justin Addler, even conference called with a third man using smuggled cellphones to discuss "pooling their financial resources" to get a discount on heroin.

At least 17 people appeared in court Wednesday in Indianapolis after about 300 FBI agents fanned out across the state and made arrests. A judge ordered them to remain in custody. Only one prison guard was among those charged, though the indictment alleges several were involved. Prosecutors declined to say if more charges were expected.

Few details about the defendants were included in the court documents, though prison records show Perez is serving time for murder and attempted murder at Westville Correctional Facility in northern Indiana, while Addler is housed at central Indiana's Pendleton Correctional Facility on convictions including drug dealing.

The indictment details a series of alleged phone calls the two men placed to people outside the prisons, including to oversee the purchase of "large amounts" of heroin from a source in Chicago. They also instructed people how and where the drugs should be sold, prosecutors allege.

"Once acquired, the heroin was brought from Illinois to Indiana by the use of couriers where it was, in turn, distributed on the streets to various places" in central and southern Indiana, the indictment states.

Meth was acquired from sources in California, while other drugs, including PCP, were also involved, according to the indictment.

In at least one call in May 2012, Addler stayed on the phone with a woman "throughout the duration" of a drug deal as she sold about 20 grams of heroin at a truck stop in Crawfordsville, Ind., for $2,500, according to the indictment.

Tim Horty, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett, declined to discuss the indictment, including whether additional inmates or prison guards might be charged. Doug Garrison, a spokesman for the Indiana Department of Correction, also declined to comment.

The lone corrections officer facing charges, Jon Dobbins, worked at another prison, the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in southwestern Indiana. The indictment alleges he was found "in possession" of nearly 21 grams of a substance containing meth, and had a cellphone that he intended to "clandestinely bring" into the prison and leave with an inmate.

Dobbins didn't have a listed phone number in Indiana, according to phone records. Horty confirmed that Dobbins was the only correctional officer named in the indictment, but he declined further comment.

The Indiana Department of Correction issued a statement saying it has been cooperating with the FBI since the investigation began and that that department uncovered the evidence that led to Dobbins.

"The actions of the small number of any IDOC correctional employees who may have facilitated these illegal activities brings dishonor to them and tarnishes the good name and professionalism of the vast majority of IDOC employees," the department's statement said.

MakerPlane lets you build an experimental aircraft with digital printers

DNP MakerPlane

If you're a member of that mildly crazy tribe who want to build and actually fly their own airplane, MakerPlane has a new way of enabling your obsession. The open source aviation organization will allow you to download its plans and schematics for free, then build your plane's parts using CNC (computer numerically controlled) mills and 3D printers. If you don't have one of those lying around, you'll be able to go to a "makerspace" replete with all the necessary tools to get your wings whipped up, instead. As for keeping the blue side up, open source avionics software will also be included, allowing bold dabblers to create digital flight instruments and displays. For now, the group is working on its first set of plans, led by an aeronautical engineer volunteer, and hopes to have that design (shown above) flying in time for the Oshkosh airshow in 2014. While you're waiting, start looking for trusting souls brave enough to fly in a small plane you built yourself.

Outside money pouring into Ohio's Senate race

(AP) ? Nowhere is as much money being spent on a Senate race this year as in Ohio, where liberal Democrat Sherrod Brown is seeking a second term, his fate to some degree dependent on how well President Barack Obama does in the state's tossup presidential contest.

Outside interest groups are flooding the state with money. Labor, environmental and other liberal groups are spending on behalf of Brown; the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, business and conservative groups are bundling campaign cash in support of Republican challenger Josh Mandel.

The Chamber of Commerce and Crossroads GPS, an independent group associated with Republican strategist Karl Rove, have spent a combined $11.6 million against Brown, and plan to spend $6.7 million more before November.

Their goal is to return the Senate to GOP control after six years of being run by Democrats. They need a net pickup of four seats ? three if Republican Mitt Romney wins the White House ? and one of their juicier targets is Brown, who voted 100 percent with the AFL-CIO in 2010 but only 9 percent with the Chamber of Commerce.

Environmental, labor and political committees lining up against Mandel, the Republican state treasurer, have spent a combined $3.1 million. Even after outraising Mandel's campaign committee by $5 million, Brown has been significantly overspent.

Brandon Twyman, 22, a movie theater worker in Columbus, views all the ads as a waste of good TV time.

"People want to get their point across, I understand that, but at the same time you're wasting millions of dollars where millions of dollars could go somewhere else," he said. "To me, I don't think it's necessary."

Brown's surprise victory six years ago in this closely divided swing state made him the first Democrat the state had sent to the Senate since former astronaut John Glenn's retirement in 1999. He's maintained a single-digit lead over Mandel in polls, but he's also struggling to break 50 percent and could be vulnerable if Obama falters badly in November.

His critics try to tie Brown with presidential priorities least popular in the closely divided state ? including the health care overhaul and energy policies they paint as anti-coal. One of the most recent TV spots funded by Crossroads GPS asks: "Who's the biggest supporter of the Obama agenda in Ohio? It's Sherrod Brown."

Before Obama bounced back in the polls, Mandel called Brown a rubber stamp for the president's policies.

Brown defends his vote for Obama's health care overhaul and his support for the auto industry bailout. In a recent ad, he kicked the tire of an auto made of Ohio parts and noted that the bailout had saved more than 800,000 Ohio jobs. It turned out the tire he kicked wasn't made in the state.

Mandel, from the Democrat-heavy Cleveland area that tends to produce more moderate Republicans, has walked a fine line on the bailout ? saying it had its effective elements but wasn't the savior of the industry.

A Marine veteran who served two tours in Iraq, Mandel unseated the Democratic state treasurer in 2010 in his first statewide election. Republicans quickly recruited him to challenge Brown, figuring the youthful fiscal conservative could tap into the rising anger directed at longtime politicians in Washington.

"I'm 34. I look like I'm 19," Mandel likes to say while campaigning.

He appeals to voters to put a fresh face in Congress and paints Brown, 59, as a "career politician" who's been in office too long.

"Sherrod Brown has been a politician since Richard Nixon was president," Mandel said in an interview. "If Sherrod Brown was the answer to our problems, they would have been solved long ago."

Brown, who began his political career in 1974 as the youngest state representative in Ohio history, counters that Mandel is a job-hopper ? moving rapidly from city council, to state legislator, state treasurer and now Senate candidate.

"Let's put it this way: I've served in four offices in my many years in government. He is running for his fourth office in less than 10 years," Brown said. "It's just one job after another, after another, on his way to being something, and I take this job more seriously than that."

Even before the outside spending, the two Senate campaigns have raised a record-setting $25 million ? $15 million for Brown and $10 million for Mandel. That's more than the entire amount spent in each of the state's last two Senate races.

Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern credits Crossroads and other conservative groups with propping up Mandel.

"The only reason Josh Mandel's campaign is alive today is because Karl Rove continues to give it CPR," Redfern said.

Mandel called that "hogwash." He notes that ads against him also are being funded by outsiders, including the Service Employees International Union and the League of Conservation Voters. Majority PAC, an independent group supporting Democrats, has spent about $1.1 million.

After Mandel was criticized for breaking a promise to serve a full four years as treasurer and giving jobs and raises to political operatives, his office released a report this month saying his cost-cutting and streamlining initiatives led to a $1.6 million surplus during the most recent fiscal year.

Swimsuits you need for your vacation - Shopping Blog - Become.com

womens wet suits, women's bathing swim skorts

With the temperatures still at an all time high, I bet heading out to the beach is something that most of you?ll are planning. There are quite a few things you would require before you go to a beach like sun screen towels etc. The most important of all is definitely your swimsuit.

If you have planned on a vacation where you would be heading out to beaches, lakes as well as water themed parks this summer then you would require different types of swimsuits. In case you vacation plans involve going around cooler places or water sports then wearing a wetsuit would be necessary. Wetsuits can be worn in case you have kayaking/cannoning in your vacation plans.

There are different types of wetsuits available based on the weather. During warm temperatures a summer suit would be a good option. This suit has short legs and arms thereby allowing you a great deal of flexibility. It also helps retain and supply warmth to the torso and upper leg regions. The womens wet suits by Body Glove are one of the best ones out there. In case you are heading to cooler regions then a spring steamer or a winter wetsuit would be your best bet.

Both these suits have full length arms and legs. The only difference between them is usually the thickness. Spring steamers usually have a thickness of about 3 mm while winter suits have thickness of about 5mm and above. Winter suits usually have neoprene hoods, gloves and boots to keep your body protected from the cold.

If you are just out to relax and take a casual swim then getting yourself swim skorts would be a great idea.? A swim skort is basically a skirt with hidden shorts. The Coolibar Women?s bathing Swim Skorts are perfect in case you plan to take a casual swim in the water or for lounging. They also have UPF 50+ sun protection to keep you safe. It also features a small hidden mesh pocket for storing a key or spare change. So get yourself the right swimsuit and head out swimming this summer.
