Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum: Bulldogs, Brohms and Boattails

by Nancy DeWitt and Willy Vinton

As noted in our last post, it's been a busy summer at the museum. Among the 30 or so cars we've tuned up and exercised are three carrying the legendary Stutz name.

Mention the word "Stutz" and immediately the famous Bearcat comes to mind. Much less well-known, even among many automobile afficionados, is the stylish Bulldog. Introduced in 1914, it was identical to the Bearcat except that it carried a four-passenger sport touring body. Although heavier than a Bearcat and equipped with a windshield, a Bulldog could attain a respectable speed of 75 mph. This 1918 Series S 4-Passenger Special is one of only a few Bulldogs remaining. It carries an 80-hp, 4-cylinder T-head engine with four valves per cylinder. Willy says, "This car is very capable of running 80 mph today (not that I have tried--really!).?When riding in or driving this car, it's obvious?why people wanted a Bulldog. Both Ethan and Steve had ear-to-ear grins when I took them for a ride."

Often called "The Forgotten Stutz," the elegant Speedway Six was produced for a few short years.?Equipped with high-grade coachwork and a new Stutz-built engine, it was the company's most luxurious automobile yet. The sedan body on our 1925 Series 695 Sportbrohm was made by the Robbins Body Corporation. The dash, steering wheel and window frames are solid black walnut, and the sumptuous interior features mohair upholstery, silk curtains and crystal bud vases. Only a handful of Series 695 models still exist. Stutz guaranteed that its 95-hp, 8-cylinder inline engine could propel the car to 80 mph. "For a 60s paint and upholstery job," says Willy, "this car still shows well and the body is remarkable for its fit and finish. The doors still close tight, the windows roll up and down like new, and it runs and drives very smooth and quiet."

Stutz introduced their radically different Vertical Eight in 1926, and the Speedway Six was soon forgotten. The new "Safety" chassis design allowed the body and frame to sit quite low, which reduced the risk of tipping. Other new safety features included four-wheel hydraulic brakes and a wire-reinforced windscreen. The racy Black Hawk was perhaps the most fashionable of the Vertical Eights. Our 1927 Series AA Black Hawk is powered by a 95-hp, single-overhead-cam straight-eight. Its boattail design added 10-12 mph to the car's top speed.?Willy says, "I have to say that, of all our cars, this may be the most fun one to drive.?I took it out last Wednesday evening for the local car club cruise, and it really turned some heads. One gentleman came into the museum later and spotted the car back on the floor. He was very impressed to see that we truly do drive our cars." It's hardship duty, but someone has to do it!

Passive investing in stocks based on market cap :: Asset Allocation ...

istockphoto

One can passively invest one's whole stock portfolio based exclusively on market capitalization. The total market cap of a stock is price times the number of shares issued. For example, the percentage of the entire stock portfolio devoted to Microsoft would be the market value of all of Microsoft stock divided by the market value of all publicly traded stock in the world.

One way of passively investing one's stock portfolio exclusively by market cap is to place the entire stock portfolio in one broad index fund with both U.S. and foreign stocks. (Stock indexes weighed by market cap.)

An alternative to strict adherence to market cap is investment in several index funds (different slices of the stock universe) with automatic periodic rebalancing. For example, among the many stock index funds available are:

  • S & P 500 (large cap)
  • Midcap
  • Small-cap
  • European
  • Pacific
  • Emerging markets
  • Growth
  • Value

With an investment in several of these specialized index funds, one must decide the initial percentage of the stock portfolio to allocate to each fund. After making this initial decision, one can adhere to these percentages through automatic periodic rebalancing. That forces selling high and buying low.

To illustrate, suppose because of stock price changes, the Pacific Stock Index Fund comes to constitute a lower percentage of the portfolio than initially targeted, and the European Stock Index Fund is a higher percentage than target.

Automatic periodic rebalancing to target percentages forces one to sell the European Stock Index Fund (at a ?high? price) and purchase the Pacific Stock Index Fund (at a ?low? price).

(Rebalancing does involve transaction costs; the optimal interval between rebalancing is a complex question not addressed here. Also, I shall assume the investor does not engage in tactical asset allocation.)

Automatic rebalancing and index fund investing are both ?passive? strategies in that the stock portfolio is on auto-pilot. Nevertheless, the two approaches are different. Indeed, a tension exists between them.

In contrast to automatic rebalancing, strict adherence to market cap generally forces the investor into a ?momentum? approach: increasing investment in stocks appreciating in value.

To illustrate, assume a universe of only two stocks: X and Y, with equal market cap.

The investor buys of an index fund that weights by market cap.

Indirectly, the investor holds istockphoto One can passively invest one?s whole stock portfolio based exclusively on market capitalization. The total market cap of a stock is price times the number of shares issued. For example, the percentage of the entire stock portfolio devoted to Microsoft would be the market value of all of Microsoft stock divided by the [...] of X and istockphoto One can passively invest one?s whole stock portfolio based exclusively on market capitalization. The total market cap of a stock is price times the number of shares issued. For example, the percentage of the entire stock portfolio devoted to Microsoft would be the market value of all of Microsoft stock divided by the [...] of Y. Assume that this X stock doubles in value to ; this Y stock falls in value to

.

This results in a portfolio that is 80% in X and 20% in Y.

By staying put in a market-cap-weighted index fund, the investor has increased investment in the appreciating stock and decreased investment in the falling stock ? although there is not necessarily any reason to think that these stocks will continue to rise and fall, respectively.

A ?momentum? investor (who believes that stock price trends tend to persist) would be delighted with a portfolio that is now 75% in the appreciating stock X.

On the other hand, an investor who has opted for periodic automatic rebalancing would sell X and buy Y to restore the original 50/50 allocation, thereby selling X ?high? and buying Y ?low, ? somewhat like a contrarian active investor.

(Even within a specialized index fund, stocks that appreciate will constitute a larger percentage of the portfolio. That will please momentum investors and displease contrarians.)

To provide a simple illustration, suppose one investor chooses to invest its entire stock portfolio in a total stock U.S. market index fund (perhaps one that mimics the MSCI U.S. Broad index). Another investor decides to invest its entire stock portfolio as follows: X% U.S. large-cap index fund (perhaps an S&P 500 fund), Y% U.S. midcap index fund and Z% U.S. small-cap index fund. X%, Y% and Z% reflect the current relative market caps of those three categories. The second investor also decides to rebalance to those ratios once a year.

The two investors will start with roughly equivalent stock portfolios. Assume that after a year, the large-cap index increases 20%, and the midcap and small-cap indexes each decrease 20%.

The first investor will stay put. To rebalance back to the initial ratios, the second investor will sell some of the large-cap index fund and buy more of the midcap and small-cap index funds. The portfolios of the two investors will diverge.

In advance, it is impossible to know for certain which investor will do better over time. Nevertheless, the periodic rebalancing has the advantage of forcing the second investor to sell ?high? and buy ?low.?

(Even if one's entire stock portfolio consists of just a single comprehensive stock index fund, one can automatically periodically rebalance among stocks, bonds, and ?alternative? assets. This broad rebalancing would still provide a benefit. Nevertheless, the investor would lose the advantage of rebalancing among specialized stock index funds.)

In short, an investor has the choice between (1) one comprehensive stock index fund that weights by market cap or (2) several more specialized stock index funds. The latter permits more automatic periodic rebalancing to target percentages.

A tension exists between rebalancing and weighting by market cap.

(AP) ? The costs of launching the new A-class compact and B-class hatchback hurt earnings at German automaker Daimler AG. Net profit fell 11 percent in the second quarter to ?1.51 billion ($1.83 billion) from the same period a year ago, despite strong sales.

The company nonetheless described the earnings as "very good" Wednesday and stuck to its earnings target ? but added a cautionary statement that "economic uncertainty and risks exist in nearly all regions."

"We therefore remain vigilant in our monitoring of general economic developments and the volatile markets," it said.

Some analysts had speculated the company might have to abandon its profit forecast, which says this year's earnings before interest and taxes, or EBIT, from continuing operations will equal last year's. Yet this year's EBIT has lagged last year's over the first two quarters of this year, raising questions about whether the company can make up that lost ground by year end.

The company's results for the quarter beat analyst expectations, and investors were relieved there was no profit warning. Daimler shares rose 3.7 percent to ?37.47 in midday trading in Europe.

During a conference call with journalists, CEO Dieter Zetsche dismissed talk about a profit warning, saying that "this speculation was wrong."

He said, however, that simply "opening the newspaper in the morning, we have an intensive discussion every day about economic clouds in the sky, which are floating especially over Europe."

Added to that were questions about the sustainability of the economic recovery in the U.S., a key market for Mercedes, and whether China would undergo a moderate slowdown in growth or a "hard landing," he said.

Europe is struggling to contain a crisis over too much debt in some countries; fears that Spain may need a bailout from other governments, or that Greece may leave the euro, have weighed on consumer demand in many markets in Europe, and a financial implosion could deepen what is already a mild slowdown in Europe. Mercedes sales fell 4 percent in Europe during the second quarter, while they increased 14 percent in China and 21 percent in the United States.

Although Daimler's second quarter net profit of ?1.51 billion fell from ?1.70 billion in the same period the year before, it beat the expectation of ?1.40 billion among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue grew 10 percent to ?28.9 billion. The biggest division ? its Mercedes-Benz Cars division that makes both Mercedes and Smart brands ? saw operating earnings fall 16 percent to ?1.31 billion despite record unit sales globally for the Mercedes brand. Unit sales for Mercedes rose 4 percent to 370,384.

Daimler, based in Stuttgart, cited added expenses for launching the new A-Class and B-Class. Both cars have been top sellers but the company said it had incurred additional costs, including expanding production capacity.

The company expressed optimism about the new A-class, which goes on sale in September and already has 40,000 orders. The company has reached deal to outsource production of 100,000 or more A-classes to Finland's Valmet Automotive starting next year, saying its own plants in Rastatt, Germany, and Kecskemet, Hungary, were fully booked. Handing off some production will ensure the shortest possible delivery times to customers, the company says.

Belmont Winner Union Rags Retired with Suspensory Injury

by Claire Novak and Steve Haskin

Owner Phyllis Wyeth has decided to retire 2012 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Union Rags, her adviser Russell Jones said July 20.

"I spoke to Phyllis about two hours ago," Jones said. "She discussed it with Jamie (her husband) and it was all about the risk factor. This was a time to make the tough decision. The horse is very much in the limelight as far as breeders go at this moment, and they felt like it would be a challenge and a risk to be back in this position next year."

The 3-year-old son of Dixie Union was sidelined for the rest of the year after a small lesion in the middle of the suspensory ligament in his left front leg. The injury was detected last week as he was training for a start in the July 29 Haskell Invitational (gr.I). Jones said the owner was searching for a stud deal.

"There was a lot of risk involved because if they did not get him back to where he is now, it would be at a significant cost," said Jones. "This is all I was told."

Understanding Equine Medications is your A-Z guide to learning more about generic and brand-name pharmaceuticals, possible side effects and precautions, and proper dosage.

Trainer Michael Matz was looking forward to Union Rags' return to the races. He declined to comment on the situation other than to refer all questions to Jones, stating he hadn't been told anything other than retirement was being considered.

Bred in Kentucky, Union Rags is out of the Gone West mare Tempo. He won the Three Chimneys Saratoga Special (gr. II) and Champagne Stakes (gr. I) last year and finished second by a head to Hansen in the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).

This year, he captured the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) in addition to the Belmont Stakes, finished third in the Florida Derby (gr. I), and was a troubled seventh in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). He won five of eight races in his career while earning $1,798,800

WikiLeaks?says that the ensuing blockade has led to a 95 percent fall in revenue, something which founder Julian Assange says has forced him to focus on fundraising at the expense of his site's publication work.

The judgment, handed down by Reykjavik District Court, is "a very important milestone in our campaign," WikiLeaks?spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson said in a telephone interview. Lawsuits remain active in Denmark and in Belgium, he said, but the Icelandic win was "a small but very important step in fighting back against these powerful banks."

The District Court ordered Visa and MasterCard's local partner, Valitor, to resume funneling donations to WikiLeaks' payment processor, DataCell, within two weeks or face 800,000 kronur (about $6,000) in daily fines, according to DataCell lawyer Sveinn Andri Sveinsson.

The implications of the judgment, which Valitor plans to appeal, weren't immediately clear.

Even if Valitor is eventually forced to comply with the judgment, it isn't clear whether Visa or MasterCard would allow their customers to make donations to DataCell or?WikiLeaks. Both companies have refused to deal with?WikiLeaks?for the better part of two years, leading to allegations that they had bowed to U.S. pressure to starve the organization of funds.

Neither Visa Inc. nor MasterCard Inc. immediately returned emails seeking comment on the judgment.

New American Chemical Society Podcast

WASHINGTON, July 11, 2012 The latest episode in the American Chemical Society's (ACS') award-winning Global Challenges/Chemistry Solutions podcast series describes a new, inexpensive paper-based device designed for diabetes testing in rural areas of developing countries.

Based on a report by Jan Lankelma, Ph.D., and colleagues in ACS' journal Analytical Chemistry, the podcast is available without charge at iTunes and from www.acs.org/globalchallenges.

It explains the need for less-expensive methods to help people with diabetes monitor their blood sugar levels. The disease is surging in India, China and other areas of the world where poverty limits the availability of health care. Although existing diabetes test strips seem inexpensive, the cost can be prohibitive in those areas. To address these challenges, the researchers developed a new glucose monitor made from inexpensive materials that measures sugar levels in urine.

Global Challenges/Chemistry Solutions is a series of podcasts describing some of the 21st century's most daunting problems, and how cutting-edge research in chemistry matters in the quest for solutions. Global Challenges is the centerpiece in an alliance on sustainability between ACS and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Global Challenges is a sweeping panorama of global challenges that includes dilemmas such as providing a hungry and thirsty world with ample supplies of safe food and clean water, developing alternatives to petroleum to fuel society, preserving the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for our children and improving human health.

Stand Up Now To Stick Around Later

60-Second Science60-Second Science | Health

Sitting for less than three hours a day could increase average life expectancy by two years. Katherine Harmon reports.

More 60-Second Science

Here's news you don't want to hear sitting down. Okay, are you standing up? Cutting down on the amount of time spent sitting might add years to average life expectancy. So says a report in the journal BMJ Open. [Peter Katzmarzyk and I-Min Lee, Sedentary Behavior and Life Expectancy in the USA: A cause-deleted life table analysis]

Office jobs, long commutes, catching up on TV shows?so many aspects of modern life conspire to make us sedentary. But this comfortable lifestyle takes a toll on our collective health. Obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome are surging. Even people, your humble host included, who exercise regularly spend much of the workday planted in a chair in front of the computer. And various studies suggest that these long stretches of being sedentary have deleterious effects on our health, even if we're physically active at other times.

The new report reviewed the scientific literature and found that if people could (somehow) manage to sit for a total of just three hours a day or less, it could add two years to the average U.S. life span. Info worthy of a standing ovation.

Gunboat diplomacy on a rebound?

Russia deploys warships off Syria. China sends threatening vessels to its neighbors over island disputes. The world can't afford a return to 19th-century naval intimidation.

On July 11, a Japan Coast Guard patrol ship (right) sailed around a Chinese patrol ship near disputed islands in the East China Sea known as the Senkaku in Japan or Diaoyu in China.

Just when the world had begun to view aerial drones as the weapon of the 21st century, the 19th-century practice of ?gunboat diplomacy? seems on a rebound.

Here are recent examples:

On Monday, Russia began to deploy warships off Syria ?for exercises? ? or perhaps to influence events there.

For more than a year, China has sent paramilitary vessels or its naval ships to intimidate Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines over island disputes and undersea resources.

Last year, President Obama deployed an aircraft carrier for joint exercises with South Korea to send a message to both North Korea (and its ally China) after a North Korean attack on the South.

Iran has threatened to disrupt oil-tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for sanctions against its nuclear program. Even Turkey has flexed its naval muscle over disputes with Cyprus and Israel.

Then there?s the Arctic. The melting of the icecap has touched off a tense display of naval ships from several nations trying to claim maritime rights to newly opened ocean passages.

Meanwhile, in Britain ? the country that defined gunboat diplomacy in the 19th century to maintain its empire ? the head of the Royal Navy offered a defense of the practice last February:

?Even a cursory glance at the numerous ?gunboat diplomacy? publications penned by diplomats, historians and academics over the years tells us that the supreme advantage of maritime power is that it can leverage ?effect without regret,? ? said First Sea Lord Adm. Sir Mark Stanhope.

Is this any way to run the world, especially with so many rules and methods these days that can resolve conflicts?

Not according to Leon Panetta, the US Defense secretary who oversees the world?s most powerful navy.

?If we?re going to engage in gunboat diplomacy everywhere we go in order to assert our rights, then the end result of that is going to be conflict,? he told Congress in May. He was trying to persuade the Senate to pass the Law of the Sea Treaty, one of many diplomatic tools that can help restrain the use of naval threats.

Naval intimidation comes in many forms. The United States has carrier fleets around the world that are usually seen as benign keepers of the peace for the world?s shipping lanes or as forward deployment in case of all-out war. China, on the other hand, has lately used its vessels in threatening ways, scaring many of its neighbors.

The better approach, said Mr. Panetta, is to ?make very clear the power we have, but then sit down and engage these other countries in a rules-based format.?

?We are strong because we play by the rules, not because we go against those rules,? he added.

That is in sharp contrast to the approach advocated by China. Last year, the state-run Global Times newspaper stated in an editorial about the maritime disputes with other Asian nations: ?If these countries don?t want to change their ways with China, they will need to prepare for the sounds of cannons.?

Before gunboat diplomacy really catches on again, the world needs to affirm that nongun diplomacy is the preferred method of resolving disputes. Today?s cannons are just too big to do otherwise.

Who Is Killing The South African Restaurant Industry?

Chapter One: Identifying the suspects

By Michael Said

Like all good crime writers, let me begin by introducing our lead character, the victim! The restaurant industry has always been a difficult industry, with a number of factors that unsuspecting entrants are often not aware of. For one thing it is a factory. You have to turn raw material into finished goods in little or no time at all. Secondly it is retail with a twist. Your clients sample the product in front of you and not once they have arrived home. Thirdly, customers are only expected to pay for their purchase after they have enjoyed it. Combine these factors with a few others like cash, alcohol and ego and you quickly realise why an owner?s visit to any table is fraught with danger.

Despite these challenges, margins were acceptable to high if you managed your business properly and the restaurant industry remained an attractive and seemingly lucrative pursuit. Alas, all that has changed over the past three years. Restaurant profitability, or retention as it is often referred to, is at an all-time low. Whereas in the past a restaurant owner could expect to retain 18-24% of his turnover, this figure is now down to between 7-14%, something on par with what the waiters are earning in tips and often less than the landlord is receiving in rent.

There are a number of key factors that have contributed to the drop in retention. First and foremost is the considerably slower than anticipated growth. The impact of this is a significant increase in the rental to turnover ratio that should ideally be sitting at 11% or less. Then there is the increased input costs as food prices climb and a budget conscious clientele continues to put pressure on restaurants not to increase their prices. I would be remiss in not mentioning the owners, franchisors and other industry role-players who are contributing to the decline, either through total apathy and neglect, or in some cases, sheer stupidity.
So the picture is not a pretty one and the casualties are mounting. Who is to blame and what can be done about it?

It is with great sadness and regret that we note the passing of yet another of Johannesburg?s restaurants. Last month, the Linger Longer Restaurant in Sandton joined the growing list of casualties and although the cause of death is yet to be determined, you can be certain that at least one, if not all, of our suspects were to blame.

Surely there must be warning signs to spur you into instituting a program of action to save the business? What are the indicators of failing health and increased risk that you can look out for in your own business? Here are a number of red flags to look out for in your own establishment and please, if you recognise any, take action now. Remember, you can always sell a restaurant a little too early, but you can?t sell it one second too late!

??The absence of a well-organized and implemented accounting system
??Key operating expenses that are too high, relative to gross sales
??Menu items that are not accurately documented, costed and updated
??Food and beverage inventory levels not counted, costed and recorded at the end of each chosen period
??Food and beverage inventory levels that are too high, relative to corresponding sales
??Daily and weekly financial operating data not collected, reviewed or acted upon
??Inaccurate posting of financial information to your accounting system
??Current liabilities sufficiently greater than current assets as to impair your future ability to pay accounts
??An owner relying on his online bank balance to determine the cash available for account payments
??An overall lack of understanding as to how to read and interpret period ending financial statements

You will see from the above that monitoring the health of your business relies less on tracking turnover or foot counts, but rather on your ability to control the financial aspects of your restaurant. If your mouth was getting a little dry or your pulse started to race as you read through the list - seek help now! Of course the best time to start putting these things in place was last year, but the second best time is now.

?To want to own a restaurant can be a strange and terrible affliction. What causes such a destructive urge in so many otherwise sensible people? Why would anyone who has worked hard, saved money, and often been successful in other fields, want to pump their hard earned cash down a hole that, statistically at least, will almost surely prove dry? Why venture into an industry with enormous fixed expenses (rent, electricity, gas, water, linen, maintenance, insurance, license fees, trash removal, etc), a notoriously transient and unstable workforce and highly perishable inventory? The chances of ever seeing a return on your investment are about one in five. What insidious spongiform bacteria so riddles the brain of men and women that they stand there on the tracks, watching the lights of the oncoming locomotive, knowing full well it will eventually run them over? After all these years in the business, I still don?t know!?

So wrote Anthony Bourdain in the now legendary Kitchen Confidential and it certainly makes a fine introduction to The Suspects. While this investigation reveals more suspects than food critics at a free lunch, I have tried to narrow it down to six. Over the next few chapters I shall state the case against each one and allow you, the jury, to make up your minds. Who can forget the board-game Cluedo with its rooms, weapons and suspects and the plain brown envelope that sat in the middle of the board waiting to reveal the mystery.

Our Suspect Six, in no particular order, are as follows?

Was it The Customer with No Spending Power in South Africa?

Was it The Supplier with No Concept Of How The Industry Functions behind his Desk?

Was it The Staff with Total Indifference in The Restaurant?

Was it The Franchisor with His Eye On The Joining Fee at the First Meeting?

Was it The Owner with No Clue Or Conception in La La Land?

Besides our six suspects, I am certain there are others that have contributed along the way, from The Banks to The Legislators and Previous Owners who sold their restaurants under false pretexts? the list goes on and on.

And what of our poor victim, how is he fairing at the moment? He is on life support, meagrely trying to eke out an existence until the December season or until the election or until the next world cup or until the government changes or doesn?t, until interest rates come down, until sentiment goes up, until? until? until?

I think not! Restaurants are closing down weekly and those that manage to keep their doors open are doing so against great odds. Of course there are the exceptions to this statement and over the next few months I hope to uncover some of the suspects and hopefully, aid some of the survivors.
